Things to do in East Riding

East Yorkshire has a great range of days out for all the family. Take in the fresh air and coastal scenery to visit Withernsea Lighthouse Museum where you can climb 144 steps for spectacular views, take in Flamborough Lighthouse only 119 steps! and the RSPB reserve of Bempton Cliffs. Other attractions include Bondville Model Village, Fort Paull – the only Napoleonic fortress in Yorkshire with views across the Humber estuary and RAF Holmpton where you can explore the underground command centre.

With spectacular scenery and pretty villages East Yorkshire’s coast is popular with walkers – Danes Dyke Beach at Bridlington is great for fossil hunters, whilst the main Bridlington Beach has great expanses of sands. The sand dunes of Spurn Nature Reserve jut out into the estuary with a lighthouse open to vistors at Spurn Point The Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail takes you past Humber Bridge, along the Humber Estuary, and Humber Valley and you can also discover the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy.
Visit Beverley with its historic buildings, racecourse and Minster – a gothic master piece. At Hull you will find historic buildings and a host of visitor attractions including art galleries, museums, maritime museum, the transport museum, Streetlife and the Deep with a range of fascinating marine exhibitions. For something different take a city tour or follow the famous fish trail.

East Yorkshire has a number of stately homes and magnificent gardens open to the public. Sewerby Hall and Gardens occupying a spectacular position on the cliff top overlooking Bridlington offers the visitor the chance to tour the house and gardens, visit the Amy Johnson exhibition and spend some time at the zoo in the grounds of the house. Sledmere House dates back over 200 years and you can explore both the house and gardens or take a walk to see the estate’s red deer. Other houses include Burton Constable Hall, Burton Agnes, Wassand Hall and Burnby Hall Gardens where visitors can take in the gardens, woodlands and lakes.

There is plenty to do from a sporting perspective with horse racing at Beverley, football at the KC Stadium and two rugby league teams – Hull F.C. and Hull Kingston Rovers. East Yorkshire hosts the oldest horse race in England – the Kiplingcotes Derby dating back to 1519.

East Yorkshire’s famous names include William Wilberforce, aviator Amy Johnson, Olympian Luke Campbell and actress Maureen Lipman.

East Yorkshire has a large range of annual events including Beverley Literature Festival, Hull Jazz Festival, Freedom and the biennial Beverley puppet festival.

East Yorkshire’s famous food includes a range of tasty sea food such as lobsters caught off the Yorkshire coast, a variation of Parkin – which originated in West Riding, as well as the other foods for which the wider Yorkshire is well known such as Yorkshire pudding.
