Tayside Overview

Welcome to Tayside

Tayside is dotted with market towns, ideal for exploring at a relaxed pace. Crieff is a typical example- a traditional market town with a fantastic selection of cafés, shops, and independent businesses.

As well as independent shops and cafés, Tayside is also known for its many Whisky distilleries, including Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery, Glenturret Distillery, Strathearn Distillery, and the Blair Athol Distillery & Visitor Centre.

Tayside is filled with areas of flourishing wildlife. The Loch of Kinnordy is a favourite among birdwatchers, providing an ideal habitat for wetland birds and a perfect day out for budding photographers.

History

A wide range of heritage attractions document Tayside’s history, including Scone Palace, where Scottish kings were crowned, and Blair Castle, home to the Atholl Highlanders.

As well as a royal history, Tayside also has a history of science and literature. In 1901, the RRS Discovery was launched from Dundee as the first vessel to be constructed purely for scientific research. After multiple expeditions and countless contributions to the discovery of marine life, Discovery was brought back to Dundee to its current home in the Discovery Point Visitor Centre.

One of Tayside’s best known literary connections is to JM Barrie, creator of Peter Pan. Born in Kirriemuir in 1860, you can still visit his childhood home to learn more about his life and his connection with the area.
