Contemporary Chinese Works on Paper: A Review
Ipswich Art Gallery, 1 Upper High Street, Ipswich, IP1 3NE
This exhibition will show the largest selection of contemporary Chinese works on paper outside of China. It explores the rich diversity of contemporary practice in Chinese drawing, printing and painting on paper in the 21st century.
Chinese calligraphy developed during the Han Dynasty of 206 BC – 220 AD whilst traditional Chinese painting evolved from this some time later.
Both traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting employ the same methods, being carried out with a brush dipped in black ink applied to highly absorbent paper. Today many artists from China still employ these traditional techniques whilst also embracing more contemporary methods in work, which both looks to the past and embraces the future.
With 72 artists and over 100 artworks visitors can explore a diverse range of pictures.
Curated by Zhang Xing, Robert Priseman and Marco Cali.
Free admission.
