Some extremely interesting and different gardens will be open in this picturesque village, plus the chance to visit the Bowling Green in action, allotments, and the church.

The day will commence with Morris Dancing on The Green at 12.00noon followed by prize giving for the winners of the Scarecrow Competition held on The Green for the children

All proceeds to Friends of Writtle Parish Church, a charity that raises funds to help maintain the fabric of the church.

Nestling in the conservation area of the Chelmer Valley in rural Essex the eleven-acre gardens at Ulting Wick have been redesigned, extended and developed over the past 15 years by Philippa and Bryan Burrough.

The garden is centered around three listed black Essex barns and a 17th century farmhouse. The buildings provide structure, shelter and a canvas for exuberant, colourful and vibrant planting of thousands of tulips in box-edged beds followed by an exotic display of dahlias, bananas, grasses, cosmos, sunflowers and other annuals to provide late summer interest.

There are three distinct areas to the garden. A walled patio with raised beds of ferns, climbers, hostas and planters.

Steps up to middle garden with a large koi pond, seating area, with acers, shrubs, herbaceous plants, grasses and grapevine.

Numerous retro artefacts creatively upcycled. The third area is a kitchen garden with raised beds of fruit trees and bushes, herbs and vegetables.

Barnardiston House – Witham

 

A circular deck overlooks a beautiful circular lawn and follows around the magnolia grandiflora. There is also a hidden circular pond with a small decking area beyond.

Across the garden are raised beds, laid out in a geometric pattern, where small quantities of many different varieties of both modern and heritage vegetables are grown. Apple, pear, fig and plum trees are a real delight and thrive in this garden oasis.

The garden is largely organic, no pesticides being used, and herbicides very occasionally on paths.

Harwich Gardens – Harwich

Five different gardens by the seaside. All within walking distance in the historical town of Harwich.

8 St Helens Green, just 100m from the sea. Whilst a small town garden, there is an abundance of dahlias, salvias, and hydrangeas mixed with complimentary perennials.

63 Church Street (access via Cow Lane) is a long, narrow walled courtyard with shrubs, climbers, perennials and veg packed into the garden and architectural features including an Elizabethan window with original glass.

30 Church Street (access via Customs House Lane) is a tiny courtyard reclaimed from a barren space in 18 months. Crammed with pots and climbers it is a restful space. The sunken garden is a hidden gem.

Behind Quayside Court, originally a Victorian hotel and is possibly below sea level, features a pond, veg patch, roses and climbers.

The Walled Garden, a garden without a house. A previous waste area enclosed by high walls planted with perennials.

A superb plant lovers garden, featuring herbaceous plants, trees and shrubs with year-round interest. Winding paths lead to a stunning rockery backdrop to a natural pond.

The Art Garden, leads into another ‘room’ with a Mediterranean feel containing dry garden, palms and grasses. An archway leading to a Koi Carp pond with water feature.

The barn features Doddinghurst Art Society annual Art Exhibition and sale of original water colours, acrylics and ceramics. All work by local artists many featuring local places of interest and all available to buy.

Layer Marney Tower Open House and Garden – Layer Marney, Colchester

 

Come along and enjoy a visit to Layer Marney Tower and its wonderful garden. The Long Gallery, church, & the Medieval Barn will also be open for you to explore.

Enjoy tea and cake in the delightful tea room and watch performances by the Military Wives Choir*, Rock Choir* & Leigh Orpheus Male Voice.
